Fourth Degree

The Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus is the ceremonial arm of the Order, adhering to the principal of Patriotism. The Assembly of 4th degree Knights may be comprised of Knights from several councils in an area or from a single council.

In 1900, the Order was expanding, but members felt that there should be an importance placed on a sense of patriotism. That year, the Order officially added “Patriotism” to the Knights’ principles and on February 22, 1900, the first Fourth Degree Exemplification took place in New York City, with 1,100 Knights participating. A similar event took place in Boston in May with another 750 candidates taking the Patriotic Degree. The importance of the Fourth Degree was then born.

Generally, an assembly is made up of Knights from more than one council in a city. As it applies to Council 1310, Fourth Degree members are part of the Msgr. Roy M. McDonald Assembly 618. We share the membership in the Assembly with members of Council 9270 (Immaculate Heart of Mary).

Fourth Degree members are known as Sir Knights. While each council has a Grand Knight, the assembly’s equivalent is the Faithful Navigator. The current Faithful Navigator of Assembly 618 is Faithful Navigator, Jean-Guy Fournier

There is generally a Fourth Degree Exemplification every year for Assembly 618 to enlist new members. Membership is open to any Third Degree Member in good-standing with his council. The Assembly meets in Council 1310’s Chambers on the fourth Monday of each month at 7:30 P.M. between September and May.

The Roy M. McDonald Assembly is profoundly saddened by the loss of a wonderful Sir Knight and Past Faithful Navigator, Thomas “Tom” Kehoe. Tom was a very caring man and a very passionate member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Council 9270 in Riverview and a guiding hand to our Assembly. We pray for his rest in Eternal Life with God and pray for his wife, Hughena (Ena) and his family in this difficult time.

On June 26th, 2017, the Roy M. McDonald Assembly 618 held its yearly Installation of Officers for the 2017-2018 Fraternal Year.  This is a group shot following the event.

Earlier in 2017, our Faithful Friar, Father Laurence Quin-Morris was in Rome as part of his 40th Anniversary in the Priesthood.  While there, he was able to meet our Holy Father, Pope Francis in a General Audience in the Pope Paul VI Auditorium at the Vatican.  Our Assembly congratulates Father Laurence for this milestone celebration!
